What is the MiaoMiao Sensor?
In its most basic form, the MiaoMiao sensor is a device which allows you to turn the FreeStyle Libre into a CGM.
It allows continuous glucose readings every 5 minutes straight to your mobile phone or watch.
A CGM is a continuous glucose monitor which gives you the ability to constantly monitor your blood sugar levels, without needing to “scan” or give a finger prick. You can see your blood sugar instantly via your phone, external device, or even a smart watch.
You’ll also be able to create alarms which allow you to prevent and monitor high and low blood sugars.
The FreeStyle Libre on it owns is NOT a CGM, as you need to scan your sensor to create data, whereas the MiaoMiao sensor enables you to turn your FreeStyle Libre into a CGM by allowing continuous data via a compatible app such as xDrip, or Spike.
This means the MiaoMiao also gives you the ability to set alarms for high and low blood sugars.
Be aware that the FreeStyle Libre 2 may not require the need for the MiaoMiao Sensor, as it’s got an inbuilt alarm system.
You can read my full review on the Freestyle Libre 2 right here.
Is the MiaoMiao Sensor a CGM?
So, to summarise what I’ve discussed in the above section, the MiaoMiao turns you FreeStyle Libre into a CGM.
The MiaoMiao is NOT a CGM on it’s own. It cannot be used without a FreeStyle Libre, and it cannot be used with the Dexcom, Medtronic Enlite Sensors, or the Eversense sensor, because they are already CGMs.

MiaoMiao VS Dexcom: What’s the difference between them?
If you’re already on the Dexcom, then you might be wondering what the difference between that and the MiaoMiao are.
Well, the Dexcom is a kind of 3-in-1 system.
The transmitter, the sensor and the ability to see your blood sugars on an external screen constantly, are already combined together. So if you’re already on Dexcom, I wouldn’t see any other reason to switch to the MiaoMiao (unless it was a financial reason).
We will discuss the pricing of the MiaoMiao below, but basically it’s a one-time purchase, and the only recurring costs are for the FreeStyle Libre, which in the UK, is now available on prescriptions. So in this sense, the MiaoMiao may work out cheaper than the ongoing costs of funding a Dexcom.
Performance wise, the Dexcom would be better equipped since the Dexcom isn’t an “add-on” item, it’s a full on CGM system.
You can learn more about the Dexcom in my Dexcom VS FreeStyle Libre review.

MiaoMiao 1 VS MiaoMiao 2
The MiaoMiao 2 is essentially an updated and better design than the MiaoMiao 1, but they both operate in the same way. I’ll discuss some key features of both below.
- Check your blood glucose via your phone (compatible apps include xDrip, Glimp, Tomato & Spike), you don’t have to scan by yourself to know your glucose level in real-time.
- Auto Blood Glucose alert: The MiaoMiao sensor collects real-time glucose information every 5 minutes, and via the apps above, sends you alerts when your BG level is too high or too low or up rapid or down rapidly.
- You can share blood glucose levels with family and friends via the Tomato app. This is perfect of parents of diabetic children who want to keep a close eye on what’s happening.
- MiaoMiao 2 is designed for IP67 waterproof, that means it can be dropped into water up to one meter deep for half an hour. You can have a shower or shallow water swimming too.
- It’s rechargeable (comes with rechargeable facilities), and each charge lasts up to 14 days (The same length of time as a sensor life)
- The MiaoMiao 2 is slimmer in design and therefore more comfortable than the MiaoMiao 1. It’s less likely to get caught on a door! And, the data sensor is more stable than the MiaoMiao 1.
- Easy to wear: you can either stick it on, or use a strap to hold it down.
Offers all the same abilities above, the main difference is the device. I 1000% prefer the design of the MiaoMiao 2.
It’s less bulky, and more streamlined, and I feel like it’s less likely to catch on something and accidentally rip off.
Is the MiaoMiao worth it?
Benefits of the MiaoMiao Sensor
For every product on the market to help with diabetes, there are advantages and disadvantages. Below I’ll take you through some of the benefits of the MiaoMiao, that I’ve personally found!
1. More data, more accuracy
I like having the ability to set alarms and to get a warning that my blood sugar is going low or high. This gives me a chance to deal with the situation and prevent those swings in blood sugars from happening; and in turn help avoid diabetes burnout. The sudden swings in blood glucose levels are what often leaves me feeling drained and tired and I can see a noticeable difference when my MiaoMiao helps reduce these.
2. It’s affordable
I’ve used the Dexcom, and whilst it has its benefits, I couldn't’ really keep up with the cost of it. My FreeStyle Libre sensors are available on the NHS, which means I don’t have to self-fund them anymore, so I find that the MiaoMiao is a really great one-time investment that allows me to create a CGM experience, without the ongoing monthly costs. Of course this will be a different financial aspect for those who self-fund the FreeStyle Libre, but you just need to do the math and find out what’s better for you.

3. Share data with family and friends
I really like that I can share blood sugars and data with family and friends. When I’m with my partner it’s good to know I can hook him up to my blood sugars and if I was asleep and in hypo, he could warn me if I didn’t wake up (which happens!). I also think it’s a really useful tool for parents of young children with type 1 diabetes and can help ease some of the stress and anxiety associated with that.
4. It’s accurate
I’ve actually found the MiaoMiao to be pretty spot on with what my blood sugars actually are. I’ve tested it against finger pricks a lot and it’s never really been off. If I’m in hypo on the MiaoMiao, I would double check via a finger prick test for the first couple of attempts, then when I know it’s reading right, I trust it. Just remember that it can take up to 24-48 hours for a CGM to adjust to your blood sugars readings, and it may not be as accurate before that.
Drawbacks of the MiaoMiao Sensor
1. Your skin can react to the adhesive
I’ve experienced this once or, twice, but not every time. This will be totally personal to how your skin reacts to different adhesives. But there are alternative ways to hold your MiaoMiao in place nowadays, which can help rectify this issue.
2. It can take a while for the device to arrive in the post
Because the MiaoMiao is manufactured and shipped from China, delivery can take some time. They aim for a delivery time of 7-14 days, and this might seem quite long for some people. I think when you order, you just have to accept it won’t be here instantly. You also need to be wary about extra VAT costs and customs costs, which I personally wasn’t aware of and that became a bit of a surprise.
3. It can rip off
The MiaoMiao 2 is much smaller and more suitable than the MiaoMiao 1, but because you’re adding another bulk on another device, it creates a layer either way, which can get caught on things. I’ve ripped my FreeStyle Libre off many times when it’s got caught on something (without the MiaoMiao), so having the MiaoMiao on, just increases that risk. That being said, you can now get grips and stickers that will help your MiaoMiao stay in place for longer.
4. It can’t be used for intense water activities
The MiaoMiao 2 is waterproof up to a certain level and time period, but if you want to do something adventurous like snorkeling or scuba diving, then unfortunately the MiaoMiao won’t last. I also don’t think it’s a great device for surfing, or swimming long periods of time either. So if you’re an adventurer like me, then you might find that you’ll need to plan when you wear your MiaoMiao around certain water based activities.
Chilling by the pool, and swimming for short periods of times, will not affect your MiaoMiao!
Are there alternatives to the MiaoMiao?
Where is the MiaoMiao Sensor available?
Since it’s become so popular, you’ll be happy to hear that the MiaoMiao sensor is widely available! I could be here all day listing every country around the world, so I’m going to list the countries that currency CANNOT receive the MiaoMiao. If you’re not on this list, assume you can order one, or contact their live chat for confirmation.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Jersey (British)
- Marshall Islands
- Republic of Montenegro
- South Africa
Different countries have different delivery systems and different delivery time frames.

Overall I would definitely recommend the MiaoMiao sensor!
I actually would opt to use it over the Dexcom sensor at this stage in my life.
As I said in my Dexcom vs FreeStyle Libre review, perhaps in the future I’ll return to Dexcom; but for the time being the combination of the MiaoMiao and the FreeStyle Libre is brilliant.
I think it’s a great investment and isn’t overly expensive for the value it provides. This review is based on my own experience and the knowledge I have from using the MiaoMiao!
I definitely think it’s a great device for younger diabetics, teens and young adults who want a more flexible lifestyle.
So there you have it, my guide to the MiaoMiao. I hope you’ve found this post useful and hopefully it’s given you a better insight into what the MiaoMiao sensor entails.
